Niko the Scilian Donkey
Little Niko is so special here. His jaunty little attitude always makes us laugh. He was donated to us to be Olaf's best friend in the whole world. And he is! Olaf had no friends until this sweet little donkey joined us!. Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys are a separate breed of donkey originating from the islands of Sardinia and Sicily. Because they were so small they were employed to turn grinding stones for grain inside the peasants houses. The were also used to carry water and supplies for the families. Sweet little Niko loves his life of luxury here that's for sure!
Maple the Beaver
This sweet gal joined us as an itty bitty baby, the size of a guinea pig, this spring. She was found abandoned by an heavy equipment operator who saw her sitting on the ground. She was most likely left by her mom as she has had and still has health issues. But with good vet care and medications we are so happy she is still with us. We actually didn't think she would survive. And survive she has - she thrives at 2nd Hand Ranch. We will continue to watch her development and care for her one day at a time. Until then she brings us great joy (and a lot of work and funding) and gives us the opportunity to educate so many on her antics, her habits and her instincts! We did a collage photo -8x10 for this sponsorship because she has been just so darn cute growing up here!
Millie & Ruthie the Mules
These old gals are sure special here. They were saved from 'Kill Pens' the last step before heading out of the country to be dog food. Millie is about 30 and was in Missouri when she was heading to sale when her humans were moving to town. She was so severely foundered ( hooves very long with the bones inside twisted) she couldn't walk. We took one look at her and knew we had to bring her home. We didn't think she would ever be sound to ride, but we hoped she could be pain free. Good trimming and food over the years has reversed this injury and she is my faithful friend.
Ruthie was at a liquidation sale at a horse camp in Ohio - massive sell off of 80 horses, when we saw her on the auction block. She was soured from being used on the trail line for so many years and would pin her ears back and kick if you even looked at her. Her feet were also foundered and she was also lame. She is in her late 20s now. Well with TLC and good foot care she is also sound and thinks humans just might be ok. They are not up for adoption as they have had a long and not so good life path. Here is were they will stay living out their lives just being happy and boss gals of the herd. You can sponsor these sweet gals - $20 buys 3 nice big bales of hay for them!
Baby Squirrel and Cotton tail
Just because its cute. Often when we get a solo bunny or a solo squirrel we put them together for companionship. So with this sponsorship you will sponsor a bunny AND baby squirrel. They use the same formula so its perfect!
Otto
Otto is a magnificent domestic fox that joined us this year when his owner wanted him to have a life with other foxes to play, frolic and just be a fox. He is super sweet and loves to go for walks on his harness. He lives with Knox & Pumpkin and is quickly becoming their best friend. Domestic foxes are descendants of furfarm foxes and are docile and sweet in nature. They are like the golden retrievers of the fox world. Bred for calm temperaments and beautiful fur. Otto loves visitors and is always curious to see what treats folks have for him.
