A Legend Rides Off Into the Sunset: Help Us Welcome Moe the Mule into Retirement
For years, Moe the mule was the face of the I&M Canal Barge, pulling history to life for thousands of guests. Born in 1990, Moe began his second career at the age of 17, making the long journey to Illinois to join the I&M Heritage Corridor. Over his career, he met an estimated 30,000 visitors!
Now, at 25, it's time for this hard-working, cherished mule to finally hang up his harness and enjoy a peaceful retirement with us!

Moe's Special Needs
We are thrilled to welcome Moe into our herd of rescued equines, but as a senior, he requires very specific care:
- Medical: Moe has Cushing's Disease and needs daily medication costing approximately $250 per month.
- Routine Care: He requires annual dental work, hoof trims every 8 weeks, and special senior feed and supplements.
Come Visit! We host volunteer days every Saturday where folks can come groom, cuddle, and show some love to Moe and all the sweet horses, donkeys, and mules in our care.
Dr Christina Shepherd Causemaker and Vet Tech Nichole Vermillion-Gorman gave all the love to Moe as he has his teeth worked on he has some serious bad hooks hurting his mouth no wonder he wasn't wanting to eat his grain( equine teeth grow their whole life) then they drew blood for a full panel workup and a cushing test sent to the Lab. You see he has Cushing's disease and folks feeding him apples and carrots were killing him with kindness - it's a serious disease and can not have apples or carrots and he's on medication that costs $250 a month for Cushing's as well. We will get him back on track with his health. He gets special low sugar senior feed, chopped hay, and deep soft bedding for his old legs. As for his age. We have been told everything from 11 years old on some paperwork to 35. I've had messages from people saying he's 25, 29, 35 all over the place Well today after examining his teeth the best the vet could guess is mid 20s with a hard life. So we will get him back on track and get his coat shiny and some weight on him - in no time he will be all sassy and pretty again.
This is the special grain we feed Moe to help with his Cushings.
